DOG walkers and visitors to Birmingham’s largest park have been warned over toxic algae.

Rangers at Sutton Park warned visitors to stay out of the water after discovering high levels of the blue-green algae in two pools.

Signs have now been put up at Keepers and Blackroot Pools in the park.

A Birmingham City Council spokesman said: “In partnership with the Environment Agency, parks staff regularly monitor the water in pools and lakes across the city and have found increased levels of the algae in Blackroot and Keepers Pools.

“Blue-green algae, or cynobacteria, can be fatal for animals and cause sickness and muscle pain in humans.”

The council spokesman said staff would continue to monitor the algae levels in the park and would issue a notice when the levels had reduced to normal.
