THINGS TO DO TO PREVENT YOUR DOG BEING STOLEN

Post  Admin on Tue Dec 11, 2007 7:55 am

Have your pet micro-chipped.
Update your micro-chipped details if you move home.
Have them spayed/neutered then you remove the motive of them being stolen for breeding purposes.
Make sure their collar has a tag with your contact details and post code. Do not put the dogs name on the tag
Never leave your dog tied up outside a shop.
Never leave your dog in a car, locked or otherwise.
Make sure your garden is as secure as possible with any gates locked.
Never leave your house with your dog in the garden unattended.
Make sure you always have an up to date picture of your dog.
It wonít lessen the chance, but make sure you have pet insurance as most policies will cover any costs incurred of trying to trace your dog.

Microchipping your pet is the best way to keep records of your pet.
It doesnít hurt and is only the size of a grain of rice.
If your pet is brought into a surgery and it has been in an accident, an owner can be traced and contacted immediately.
It costs about £20 from your vet. Sometimes vets offer 1/2 price when the dogs injection's are due.
Be sensible where you buy your pets. DO NOT BUY FROM PUPPY FARMS
Donít buy your pets from pubs, newspaper adverts or the internet.
The best place to buy a pet is from a rescue centre.
Buying your pet from a rescue centre means that you will get a healthy pet and not have to fork out for lots of medical expenses

How does Microchipping Work?

Post  Admin on Tue Dec 11, 2007 7:56 am

A. The animal is chipped by a vet inserting a tiny chip into the base of the animals neck.

B. The vet will then scan the animal to ensure that the chip is in place. The scan will show the micro chip company and a series of numbers. The numbers are exclusive to your animal.

C. Please ensure that you attach the numbers to your animals vaccination card.

D. If your animal should go missing and is scanned, these numbers will show up with the name of the micro chip company. It is then down to the vet or dog warden to telephone the company to get the details of the animal that has just been scanned.

E. Then and only then will your animals details be made available and if the information is up to date you will then be contacted and your beloved animal be returned to you.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO:
Update your animals microchip companies when your circumstances change with information like a change of address and telephone number.

* 20% of dogs that are chipped have been re homed due to the fact that owners fail to update this information.

Also a lot of pets are still stolen from secure gardens and i have heard of someone getting over a 6 foot fence to steal a dog,
so if possible try not to leave your dog alone while its in the garden.
try not to walk your dog at the same time each day and try to walk your dog different places so there is no pattern or routine also while walking your dog be aware of other people around you as it has been known for thieves to follow dog owners home and then steal the dog at a later date.
